WALKS OF LIFE: surface team movie

The Walks of Life is a Surface team movie that we have tried to make a reality for at least a couple years now. With the help of Paul Braunstein, we were finally able to put together a 20 minute short featuring Surface riders, Blake Nyman, Banks Gilberti, Ian Wade, Jeff Kiesel, John Ware, Josh Bishop, Scott Damon and of course, Anthony Boronowski.

The premier will be held at the Tower Theatre at 876 E. 900 S. in Salt Lake City this coming Monday, November 29th at 7:00pm - there will be a $5 admission fee but don't trip because plenty of swag will be tossed and there will also be a raffle going on as well. To top it all off, the party will move just a short walk up the street to FRESH SLC 870 E. 900 S. for a look at images from Surface photographers Adam Clark, Ian Matteson and Jason Eichhorst.

Proper Nutrition Part II: Complementary Proteins

Well hello there,

Welcome to Proper Nutrition Part II with Dr. Steven Janowski. This week, we will focus on complementary proteins and their importance in the diet. Complementary proteins form when you combine plant foods in order to obtain a balanced intake of essential amino acids. Examples of complementary proteins include:

(corn + beans) = complete protein
(orange juice + oatmeal). = complete protein
(legumes + grains) = complete protein
(rice + soy beans) = complete protein

For the more carnivorous of folks, red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy already contain the 9 essential amino acids for our diet.

What does this mean for the skier diet? Well folks, if your diet consists of ramen noodles, oatmeal, and rice, make sure to combine those items with a complementary food to obtain all the essential amino acids. After all, athletes perform at higher levels when properly nourished!

It’s getting hard to not hear an echo when bringing up the name Cole Drexler. With a fresh diploma in his hand and a recent handshake with Line and Joystick, Cole is getting all the arms he needs to reach the top on his way up the ranks.

Originally hailing from Waterloo, Ont., Cole moved to Collingwood at the age of 11, quit racing when he was 14 and checked into the park scene with a one-way ticket. Cole is not your average jibber's delight and best known for the "deadlung, pivot" landings and the "off that" trick inventions. Opposed to the addictive compulsion of dialing in a comp run day-in-day-out, he's creating next year’s trends and documenting the rights to his own success.

Cole’s had support getting here, too. Growing up in a family of skiers he may be one of the only kids whose parents approached him about spending his grade 11 year in Whistler—where he logged over 120 days on the slay mission. Last season he took his quiver of tricks and entered the first two rail jams of the season in Collingwood, winning both. Suddenly the local lift line for Cole got a lot shorter even on a busy day.

After making noise online, It was inevitable he would link up on a trail of destruction filming for the Voleurz family. With his local band of misfits behind him and the industry turning heads and pages, just make sure you get front row when he comes to a city near you.

Discovering your personal answers, decisions, and major life choices is a difficult process. Often times, we are too afraid of the unknown; fearing what we have yet to experience, far too enthused to risk failure. Such feelings breed trepidation, which in turn propagates a never ending cycle of "what if" scenarios and half hearted, "I wish I would have..."

Well my friend, the time is now. Life is glorious, genuinely fun, and regardless of where your decisions may lead, it is not the end result that matters, but how you get there and how well you lived along the way. For skiers, the journey is the reward, the best time in our lives is right now, and everything you have done will solidify a foundation for the future. For park skiers, building backcountry jumps allows us discover new rotations, utilize soft landings, and produce unique media in uncertain environments. For John Ware, BC jumping is a game in which he blasts music so loud he can barely hear the photographers as he drops into a feature. As dangerous as his antics may be, music allows him to focus and send perfect tricks long after other athletes stop sessioning the jump.

Drake University needs a new marketing manager! Although they are not accepting applications, their most recent enrollment campaign proves the changing of the guard will soon take place. While most universities encourage students to strive for excellence, the most recent Drake University advertisements suggest that the establishment not only accepts by condones sup-par performance and D+ GPA's.

What does this mean for skiers? That you can attend Drake in the Summer and Fall, maintain the socially acceptable D+ average, and shred all winter long. For the more academically inclined, be advised that ski careers do not last forever and having cognitive skills are far more profitable than sliding on snow.

For some, education is a compass that dictates the path into a particular job, career, or lifestyle. For John, he already found his way, he's just gaining the necessary tools to eat food long after he retries his park tricks for nipple deep days and a comfortable place to rest his head.

With trips to Mt. Hood, Whistler, New Zealand, and Argentina, our athletes ski year round and log 270 + days on snow. With so much exposure to UV rays, they would be forced to apply sunscreen multiple times a day in backcountry environments and terrain parks throughout the world. Along with being incredibly tedious, using that much sunscreen would require packing another item in their suitcases and be a very costly endeavor.

As a solution to this issue, we created the Watson Neck Gaitor to keep you looking fly and protected from UVA and UVB rays.
